The dam behind Holt Lock and Dam
Holt Lock and Dam is held back by Holt Lock and Dam (also recorded as Holt Lake) , a concrete gravity structure, resisting the reservoir by its own weight alone , standing 120 ft high and running 1,400 ft along its crest , built across BLACK WARRIOR RIVER in Tuscaloosa County , near HOLT . It was completed in 1968 , and is owned by USACE - Mobile District (a federal owner) , to a design credited to Alabama Power Co.;CESAM.
Its recorded primary purpose is navigation — the pool is held inside a narrow band to keep a navigable depth, so large swings are rare by design . It also serves navigation;recreation;hydroelectric.
It is founded on rock, with a concrete;earth core. Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. The spillway opening is 560 ft wide. Its outlet works use tainter (radial)14.
NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in.
At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 3,300 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 187,400 acre-ft against a normal storage of 117,990 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 639,500 cubic feet per second.
