The dam behind Lemon Reservoir

Lemon Reservoir is held back by Lemon Dam (also recorded as Lemon Reservoir) , a rockfill embankment — quarried rock placed in compacted layers around a sealing core , standing 284 ft high and running 1,360 ft along its crest , built across FLORIDA RIVER in La Plata County , near BONDAD . It was completed in 1963 , and is owned by BUREAU OF RECLAMATION (a federal owner) , to a design credited to BUREAU OF RECLAMATION.

Its recorded primary purpose is fish and wildlife pond — it is managed for habitat rather than yield . It also serves fish and wildlife pond;irrigation;recreation;hydroelectric.

Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 57 ft wide.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 686 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 487,660 acre-ft against a normal storage of 40,146 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 9,600 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by DWR.
