The dam behind Lake Gogebic
Lake Gogebic is held back by Bergland Dam (also recorded as Lake Gogebic Dam) , a other structure , standing 8 ft high and running 179 ft along its crest , built across West Branch Ontonagon River in Ontonagon County , near Ontonagon . It was completed in 1906 , and is owned by Upper Peninsula Power Company (a private owner) .
Its recorded primary purpose is other .
Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 179 ft wide.
NID classes it low hazard potential: a failure would be expected to damage little beyond the owner's own property. It is a consequence rating, not a condition rating. It has not been assigned a condition rating.
At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 14,080 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 276,000 acre-ft against a normal storage of 35,200 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 10,000 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by MICHIGAN DEGLE.
