The dam behind Galesville Reservoir

Galesville Reservoir is held back by Galesville , a concrete gravity structure, resisting the reservoir by its own weight alone , standing 167 ft high and running 950 ft along its crest , built across Cow Creek, Umpqua River in Douglas County , near Glendale, OR . It was completed in 1985 , and is owned by Douglas County, Oregon (a local government owner) , to a design credited to Morrison-Knudson Engineers, Inc..

Its recorded primary purpose is irrigation — the pool is drawn down across the growing season to serve water rights downstream, then refilled over winter . It also serves irrigation;fish and wildlife pond;recreation;hydroelectric;flood risk reduction.

It is founded on rock, with a concrete core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back.
