Mountain Dell Dam & Reservoir is held back by Mountain Dell , a buttress dam — a thin upstream face braced by a row of supports behind it , standing 105 ft high and running 650 ft along its crest , built across PARLEYS CREEK in Salt Lake County , near SALT LAKE CITY . It was completed in 1916 , and is owned by SALT LAKE CITY CORPORATION (a local government owner) .
Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall .
