About this gauge's record

This site's drainage basin covers approximately 41 sq mi of contributing watershed.

The dam behind Wynoochee Lake

Wynoochee Lake is held back by Wynoochee , a concrete gravity structure, resisting the reservoir by its own weight alone , standing 175 ft high and running 1,700 ft along its crest , built across Wynoochee River in Grays Harbor County , near Montesano . It was completed in 1972 , and is owned by City of Aberdeen (a local government owner) , to a design credited to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall . It also serves water supply;fish and wildlife pond;recreation;hydroelectric;flood risk reduction.

It is founded on rock, with a concrete core. Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. Its outlet works use slide (sluice gate)2;tainter (radial)2.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 04/11/2023.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 1,126 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 76,000 acre-ft against a normal storage of 69,405 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 52,500 cubic feet per second.
