Bartlett Reservoir is held back by Bartlett Dam (also recorded as Bartlett Reservoir) , a buttress dam — a thin upstream face braced by a row of supports behind it , standing 309 ft high and running 800 ft along its crest , built across VERDE RIVER in Maricopa County , near MESA . It was completed in 1939 and modified in 1997E;1997H;1997S , and is owned by BUREAU OF RECLAMATION (a federal owner) , to a design credited to BUREAU OF RECLAMATION.
Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall .
Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. The spillway opening is 150 ft wide. Its outlet works use roller3.
