About this gauge's record

This site's drainage basin covers approximately 71 sq mi of contributing watershed.

The dam behind Cragin Dam Reservoir

Cragin Dam Reservoir is held back by C.C. Cragin Dam (also recorded as Blue Ridge Reservoir;C.C. Cragin Reservoir) , a concrete structure , standing 170 ft high and running 492 ft along its crest , built across EAST CLEAR CREEK in Coconino County , near KINDER CROSSING . It was completed in 1964 and modified in 1975 , and is owned by BUREAU OF RECLAMATION (a federal owner) , to a design credited to LEEDS, HILL, AND JEWETT, INC.

Its recorded primary purpose is hydroelectric — releases follow generation schedules, so the level can move on a daily cycle that has nothing to do with drought .

Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 93 ft wide.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 344 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 19,500 acre-ft against a normal storage of 15,000 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 20,940 cubic feet per second.
