About this gauge's record

The dam behind Donner Lake

Donner Lake is held back by Donner Lake , a buttress dam — a thin upstream face braced by a row of supports behind it , standing 16 ft high and running 45 ft along its crest in Nevada County . It was completed in 1927 , and is owned by Truckee Meadows Water Authority (a public utility owner) .

Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall . It also serves water supply;irrigation.

NID classes it significant hazard potential: a failure would be expected to damage property and infrastructure rather than cost lives. It is a consequence rating, not a condition rating. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 09/01/2017.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 960 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 10,300 acre-ft. It is regulated by DWR, Division of Safety of Dams.
