The dam behind Concordia Lake

Concordia Lake is held back by Edwin A. Pape Lake Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 40 ft high and running 2,000 ft along its crest , built across PEAVINE CREEK in Lafayette County , near SWEET SPRINGS . It was completed in 1967 , and is owned by CITY OF CONCORDIA (a local government owner) , to a design credited to LANE-RIDDLE.

Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall . It also serves water supply;recreation.

It is founded on rock, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 200 ft wide. Its outlet works use valve.

NID classes it low hazard potential: a failure would be expected to damage little beyond the owner's own property. It is a consequence rating, not a condition rating. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 12/19/2007.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 284 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 4,000 acre-ft against a normal storage of 1,868 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 11,683 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by Dam and Reservoir Safety Program.
