Lock and Dam 22 Tw is held back by Mississippi River Lock and Dam 22 (also recorded as Pool 22) , a concrete structure , standing 32 ft high and running 3,264 ft along its crest , built across MISSISSIPPI RIVER in Ralls County , near ASHBURN . It was completed in 1938 , and is owned by USACE - Rock Island District (a federal owner) , to a design credited to CEMVR.
Its recorded primary purpose is navigation — the pool is held inside a narrow band to keep a navigable depth, so large swings are rare by design .
It is founded on soil, with a concrete core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 1,024 ft wide. Its outlet works use roller3;tainter (radial)9;uncontrolled0.
