Jamie Whitten Lock and Dam is held back by Jamie L. Whitten Lock and Dam (also recorded as Bay Springs Lake; Bay Springs) , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 120 ft high and running 2,750 ft along its crest , built across TOMBIGBEE in Tishomingo County , near TUPELO . It was completed in 1983 , and is owned by USACE - Mobile District (a federal owner) , to a design credited to CELRN.
Its recorded primary purpose is navigation — the pool is held inside a narrow band to keep a navigable depth, so large swings are rare by design . It also serves navigation;recreation.
It is founded on rock and soil, with a earth core. NID records no spillway for it. The spillway opening is 0 ft wide.
