About this gauge's record

This site's drainage basin covers approximately 2,164 sq mi of contributing watershed.

The dam behind Diversion Lake

Diversion Lake is held back by Lake Diversion Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 59 ft high and running 4,182 ft along its crest , built across WICHITA RIVER in Archer County . It was completed in 1924 and modified in 1934O , and is owned by CITY OF WICHITA FALLS;WICHITA COUNTY WID 2 (a local government owner) , to a design credited to WICHITA COUNTY WID NO 1 AND BIGGS AND MATTHEWS INC (MOD);WICHITA COUNTY WID NO 1 AND BIGGS AND MATTHEWS INC (MOD).

Its recorded primary purpose is flood risk reduction — the pool is drawn down between storms so there is empty space waiting for the next flood, which is why this level can fall in dry weather and climb sharply after rain . It also serves flood risk reduction;other;irrigation;water supply.

It is founded on soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 1,714 ft wide. Its outlet works use other controlled6;uncontrolled2.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. Its most recent condition assessment was poor — a deficiency was recognised that needs attention. That assessment is dated 08/23/2021.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 3,133 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 144,162 acre-ft against a normal storage of 33,420 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 445,467 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by TCEQ.
