The dam behind Lake Travis
Lake Travis is held back by Mansfield Dam (also recorded as Lcra Mansfield Marshall Ford Dam) , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 277 ft high and running 7,089 ft along its crest , built across COLORADO RIVER in Travis County , near AUSTIN . It was completed in 1942 , and is owned by LOWER COLORADO RIVER AUTHORITY (a local government owner) , to a design credited to DOI BR.
Its recorded primary purpose is flood risk reduction — the pool is drawn down between storms so there is empty space waiting for the next flood, which is why this level can fall in dry weather and climb sharply after rain . It also serves flood risk reduction;irrigation;hydroelectric;water supply.
It is founded on unlisted/unknown, with a earth core. Its outlet works use other controlled1;uncontrolled1;valve1.
