The dam behind Leon Reservoir
Leon Reservoir is held back by Lake Leon Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 99 ft high and running 3,700 ft along its crest , built across LEON RIVER in Eastland County . It was completed in 1954 and modified in 1975S;1987S;1989S;1998H;2001H;2018S;2021S , and is owned by EASTLAND COUNTY WSD (a local government owner) , to a design credited to FREESE AND NICHOLS AND JACOB AND MARTIN;FREESE AND NICHOLS AND JACOB AND MARTIN;FREESE AND NICHOLS AND JACOB AND MARTIN;HDR ENGINEERING INC;JACOB AND MARTIN;UNKNOWN;UNKNOWN.
Its recorded primary purpose is water supply — delivering water to its customers comes first, so drawdown here follows demand as much as it follows rainfall . It also serves water supply;other;recreation.
It is founded on soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 1,211 ft wide. Its outlet works use other controlled1;uncontrolled2.
