The dam behind Ubc Dam 5

Ubc Dam 5 is held back by Upper Brushy Creek WS SCS Site 5 Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 39 ft high and running 1,080 ft along its crest , built across TR-BRUSHY CREEK in Williamson County , near ROUND ROCK . It was completed in 1960 and modified in 2008S , and is owned by TAYLOR SWCD;UPPER BRUSHY CREEK WCID (a local government owner) , to a design credited to FREESE & NICHOLS INC;USDA NRCS.

Its recorded primary purpose is flood risk reduction — the pool is drawn down between storms so there is empty space waiting for the next flood, which is why this level can fall in dry weather and climb sharply after rain . It also serves flood risk reduction;fire protection, stock, or small fish pond.

Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 87 ft wide. Its outlet works use slide (sluice gate)1;uncontrolled2.

That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 12/20/2021.
