The dam behind Lyman Lake
Lyman Lake is held back by Lyman Dam , a rockfill embankment — quarried rock placed in compacted layers around a sealing core , standing 60 ft high and running 800 ft along its crest , built across LITTLE COLORADO RIVER in Apache County , near ST. JOHNS . It was completed in 1912 , and is owned by ARIZONA STATE PARKS;GROVERS HILL IRRIGATION DISTRICT (a private owner) .
Its recorded primary purpose is irrigation — the pool is drawn down across the growing season to serve water rights downstream, then refilled over winter . It also serves irrigation;recreation.
It is founded on rock;soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 160 ft wide.
