The dam behind Lake Oroville & Dam

Lake Oroville & Dam is held back by Oroville , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 770 ft high and running 6,920 ft along its crest , built across Feather River in Butte County , near Oroville . It was completed in 1968 , and is owned by California Department of Water Resources (a state owner) , to a design credited to DWR.

Its recorded primary purpose is flood risk reduction — the pool is drawn down between storms so there is empty space waiting for the next flood, which is why this level can fall in dry weather and climb sharply after rain . It also serves flood risk reduction;irrigation;recreation;hydroelectric;water supply.

It is founded on rock, with a earth core. Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. The spillway opening is 140 ft wide. Its outlet works use tainter (radial)8.

Its most recent condition assessment was fair: sound under normal loading, though a rare or extreme event could expose a deficiency. That assessment is dated 09/29/2023.
