The dam behind Englebright Lake Pool
Englebright Lake Pool is held back by Harry L. Englebright Dam (also recorded as Harry L. Englebright Lake; Narrows Dam) , a concrete arch, curved upstream so the load is carried sideways into the abutments , standing 280 ft high and running 1,142 ft along its crest , built across YUBA RIVER in Yuba County , near MARYSVILLE . It was completed in 1941 , and is owned by USACE - Sacramento District (a federal owner) .
Its recorded primary purpose is debris control — it traps sediment and debris rather than storing usable water . It also serves debris control;recreation;hydroelectric.
It is founded on rock. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 200 ft wide.
NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in.
At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 815 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 103,000 acre-ft against a normal storage of 70,590 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 350,000 cubic feet per second.
