The dam behind Caddo Lake
Caddo Lake is held back by Caddo Dam (also recorded as Caddo Lake) , a concrete structure , standing 48 ft high and running 1,225 ft along its crest , built across Twelve Mile Bayou in Caddo County , near SHREVEPORT . It was completed in 1971 , and is owned by Caddo Levee District Board (a public utility owner) , to a design credited to CEMVK.
Its recorded primary purpose is navigation — the pool is held inside a narrow band to keep a navigable depth, so large swings are rare by design . It also serves navigation;recreation;water supply.
It is founded on soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 2,500 ft wide.
NID classes it low hazard potential: a failure would be expected to damage little beyond the owner's own property. It is a consequence rating, not a condition rating.
At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 26,800 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 755,000 acre-ft against a normal storage of 129,000 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 36,000 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by LA DOTD.
