Comanche Creek Reservoir is held back by Comanche Peak Safe Shutdown Dam (also recorded as Category I Emergency Cooling Water) , a rockfill embankment — quarried rock placed in compacted layers around a sealing core , standing 71 ft high and running 1,520 ft along its crest , built across SQUAW CREEK in Somervell County , near GLEN ROSE . It was completed in 1979 , and is owned by TEXAS UTILITIES GENERATING COMPANY (a public utility owner) , to a design credited to FREESE & NICHOLS INC.

It is founded on unlisted/unknown, with a earth core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 40 ft wide.
NID classes it low hazard potential: a failure would be expected to damage little beyond the owner's own property. It is a consequence rating, not a condition rating. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 06/21/2023.
