The dam behind Lake Granbury
Lake Granbury is held back by De Cordova Bend Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 79 ft high and running 2,200 ft along its crest , built across BRAZOS RIVER in Hood County , near RAINBOW . It was completed in 1969 , and is owned by BRAZOS RIVER AUTHORITY (a local government owner) , to a design credited to AMBURSEN ENGINEERING.
Its recorded primary purpose is irrigation — the pool is drawn down across the growing season to serve water rights downstream, then refilled over winter . It also serves irrigation;recreation;water supply.
It is founded on rock;soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. The spillway opening is 656 ft wide. Its outlet works use other controlled1;slide (sluice gate)1.
