The dam behind Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe is held back by Conroe Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 82 ft high and running 11,800 ft along its crest , built across WEST FORK SAN JACINTO RIVER in Montgomery County , near CONROE . It was completed in 1973 and modified in 2001H;2001S;2006O;2009O , and is owned by SAN JACINTO RIVER AUTHORITY (a local government owner) , to a design credited to FREESE AND NICHOLS;FREESE AND NICHOLS;FREESE AND NICHOLS;FREESE AND NICHOLS;FREESE AND NICHOLS AND ENDRESS.

Its recorded primary purpose is irrigation — the pool is drawn down across the growing season to serve water rights downstream, then refilled over winter . It also serves irrigation;water supply.

It is founded on soil, with a earth core. Its spillway is gated, so the operator can hold the pool above the spillway crest and meter what leaves. The spillway opening is 200 ft wide. Its outlet works use other controlled1;slide (sluice gate)3.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. It has not been assigned a condition rating. That assessment is dated 10/01/2025.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 20,118 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 706,970 acre-ft against a normal storage of 416,228 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 247,247 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by TCEQ.
