About this gauge's record

The dam behind Ubc Dam 18

Ubc Dam 18 is held back by Upper Brushy Creek WS SCS Site 18 Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 36 ft high and running 2,370 ft along its crest , built across CARMEL CREEK in Williamson County , near HUTTO . It was completed in 1960 and modified in 2011S , and is owned by TAYLOR SWCD;UPPER BRUSHY CREEK WCID (a local government owner) , to a design credited to FREESE AND NICHOLS INC;USDA NRCS.

Its recorded primary purpose is flood risk reduction — the pool is drawn down between storms so there is empty space waiting for the next flood, which is why this level can fall in dry weather and climb sharply after rain . It also serves flood risk reduction;fire protection, stock, or small fish pond.

It is founded on rock;soil, with a unlisted/unknown;unlisted/unknown core. Its spillway is ungated: once the pool reaches the crest, water leaves on its own and the operator cannot hold it back. The spillway opening is 141 ft wide. Its outlet works use slide (sluice gate)1;uncontrolled2.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. Its most recent condition assessment was satisfactory — no deficiencies recognised for expected loading. That assessment is dated 02/26/2018.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 33 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 1,753 acre-ft against a normal storage of 177 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 8,594 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by TCEQ.
