About this gauge's record

This site's drainage basin covers approximately 675 sq mi of contributing watershed. USACE's continuous elevation record for this project begins in 2014 (3 tracked series for this project).

The dam behind Lake Limestone

Lake Limestone is held back by Sterling C Robertson Dam , an earthfill embankment, holding the pool back by sheer mass and an impervious core rather than by the strength of concrete , standing 62 ft high and running 11,395 ft along its crest , built across NAVASOTA RIVER in Leon County . It was completed in 1978 , and is owned by BRAZOS RIVER AUTHORITY (a local government owner) , to a design credited to USR FORREST & COTTON INC.

Its recorded primary purpose is irrigation — the pool is drawn down across the growing season to serve water rights downstream, then refilled over winter . It also serves irrigation;recreation;water supply.

It is founded on unlisted/unknown, with a unlisted/unknown;unlisted/unknown core. Its outlet works use other controlled1;slide (sluice gate)3;uncontrolled1.

NID classes it high hazard potential. That describes what a failure would cost downstream — loss of life would be expected — and says nothing about how likely a failure is, or what condition the dam is in. It has not been assigned a condition rating. That assessment is dated 08/06/2025.

At its normal pool the reservoir covers about 12,553 acres. NID records a maximum storage of 557,878 acre-ft against a normal storage of 208,017 acre-ft. Its maximum discharge capacity is 391,050 cubic feet per second. It is regulated by TCEQ.
